Medium-sized Parrots: African Greys, Conures, Ringnecks, Pionus and Poicephalus

These compact parrots are popular and even though they are not as easy to maintain as their smaller cousins, they are still much easier to manage than the larger parrots. If you want to learn more about them, or wish to share your experiences with others, this is the forum for you.

Indian ringneck behavior

Submitted by Jodi1920 on Thu, 08/18/2016 - 17:53
Hi my name is Jodi. I am new to this forum. I have an Indian ringneck, her name is peeps. And an African grey named Cosmo. My issue as of late is peeps has become aggressive. I bought her a bigger cage. ( the cage I received her in was too small for her). All she wants to do is bite. I have to distract her to feed her or she will bite the blood out of me. I cannot handle her anymore she goes to bite. She will cluck and sing for me to rub her head and after a few seconds she will go to bite me. Then she will put her foot in her mouth and stomp it in her cage.

terrible shreak from our Female Eclectus

HELP! My female Eclectus has been making a new, EXTREMELY undesirable sound lately. It sounds something like the beep of a smoke alarm when the battery is low, but it’s VERY loud and VERY shrill, causes ringing in my wife’s ears and is physically painful. Literally, it is quite painful. She does it every time she sees my wife and she does it constantly until my wife is no longer in sight. It started when the bird was sitting on a clutch of infertile eggs. My wife was concerned that she wasn’t eating, so she made her a mush out of her Birdeez Buffet and fed it to her on a spoon.

eclectus first egg

Hello Everyone Gypsy laid her first egg! Have a couple of questions if someone can answer that would be great. We noticed her being unusually quiet over the weekend and noticed an egg in her box I built for her to rest in, she really likes it. When we looked in the box Monday we saw the egg and I decided to weigh her which I have been doing since we got her. She consistently runs about 13.7 oz. and after the egg she weighs 14.7 oz. Maybe another egg is waiting to come out ?? How many eggs do the lay and how often ??

Hello we purchased Gypsy about a year and a half ago she is a beautiful eclectus parrot. Her diet consists of a wet food made by Volkman It is called Featherglow Birdeez Buffet 15 minute soak n simmer. She gets that plus fresh fruit and vegies everyday plus a dried fruit crunch medley. In the last few days I noticed her toes raising and lowering and alternating from foot to foot with an occasional wing flip. She appears healthy but I am concerned there might be something going on. If you can provide any insight to this it would be appreciated. Neal

Jealous and Aggressive Sun Conure

Submitted by FreeFlight on Thu, 01/28/2016 - 04:14
Greetings; Seeking advice for a jealous and aggressive 15-year old female Sun Conure. My girlfriend has owned the bird since it was a few months old. My girlfriend and I (male) have dated for almost 2 years. We do not live together but see each other on weekends. Her Conure has taken a strong liking to me, a possession if you will. When I am at her house and the Conure is in her cage, the Conure will be aggressive to anyone who approaches her, except for me. When out of her cage and with me, she goes into attack mode to drive other people away.

Hello, I made a boot box for Gypsy to play around in and have a nest area for when we decide to get her a mate. I was wondering what I can finish the plywood with that would be safe if she decides to chew on the plywood. Also to be able to clean the wood for when she poops on it. Any help would be appreciated. Some sort of natural oils ? Thanks Neal W

Eclectus mites

Hello everyone: Wanted to say thanks for all of the previous help with Gypsy. She is a 1 1/2 year old female Eclectus. This last weekend, my wife took her to a Faire and there were other birds there, and they co-mingled. One of the other birds shakes her head a lot, as if something is bothering her, and her owner says she does that when she’s excited. Yesterday, Gypsy started shaking her head the same way. Last night, my wife found several small black bugs at the bottom of Gypsy’s cage. They were very small, like the period at the end of this sentence. They jump and do not fly.

On September 15, 2015 I Had Got A Pineapple Conure... I'll Try To Make This Story As Short As Possible. 2-3 Weeks Before September 15, 2015 I Got Him My Husband, And I Went In To See Him... He Was The Sweetest Bird. We Got To Interact With Him For A Good 15-20 Minute, He Didn't Try To Beak Me, Or Bite Me Once, We Fell In Love With Him So Fast. This Girl Told Us Or Warned Us That Works At That Pet Store That She Has Bitten By Him, And i Though That Was Strange, Because He Was So Good With Me O.k. The 1st Few Days He Was So Good Sweet, And Nice.
