The Scaled Fruiteater (Ampelioides tschudii) - also known as Frutero Escamoso (Spanish) - within its natural range, occurs naturally in the South American countries of Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru and Venezuela, where it is relatively uncommon.

It occurs in Sierra de Perijá - a mountain range between Colombia and Venezuela, locally in the Andes mountains - from Venezuela (Lara, southeastern Tachirá) and northern Colombia south to northwestern Bolivia (La Paz, western Beni). They are also found on the coastal ranges of Ecuador, in western Esmeraldas and Guayas (Loma Alta), in western Ecuador. Locally, they also occur in Colombia (Sierra de Macarena) - east of the Andes; and Peru (Cordillera Azul).

Within its range, it inhabits subtropical or tropical moist montane forest areas.
