The Orange-breasted Fig Parrots (Cyclopsitta gulielmitertii) or William's Fig-Parrots are endemic to Salawati in Western Papuan Islands, Western Vogelkop, Western New Guinea.

The preferred habitats of these fig-parrots include subtropical or tropical moist lowland forests.


Orange-breasted Fig Parrot - MaleDescription:

Orange-breasted Fig parrots average 5 - 5.1 ins (~13 cm) in length (including tail) and weigh around 1 - 1.2 oz (28-35 g).

Their plumage is mostly green. The forehead, crown and area behind eye are a deep blue. The lores (the regions between the eyes and bill on the side of a bird's head), sides of head and the throat are pale yellow. They have a black mark on the back of the cheeks; and there is a narrow variable black line on the ear-coverts. The breast and upper abdomen are orange. The bend of the wing are dark blue. The lower abdomen, under wing-coverts and under tail-coverts are yellowish-green. The bill is blackish-grey, the irises are dark brown, and their feet grey.

Females lack the orange breast and abdomen. Their forward cheeks are a pale yellow edged with broad blackish stripe. The back of the cheeks and ear-coverts are orange. The cheeks are edged below with a greenish-blue stripe. She has green underpants.

Young birds look like females; except males have a greener breast washed with orange/brown and have orange sides to the throat.

Distribution: South-eastern New Guinea, West to the Gulf of Papua

Description: The D'Albertis' Orange-breasted Fig-Parrots is smaller in size than the nominate species.

The male has a dark blue forehead. His lores (the regions between the eyes and bill on the side of a bird's head), the front of his cheeks and the line beneath the eye is buff/white. The rest of the cheeks is black. They have pale yellow ear coverts (feathers covering the ears) to the throat, an orange breast and upper abdomen.

The female looks like the male but back part of cheeks are dusty black washed with blue. She has orange ear coverts (feathers covering the ears) and her throat and breast are dull green/yellow.

Young birds look like adult females, but have duller head markings.

Distribution: North-eastern New Guinea

Description: The Reichenow's Orange-breasted Fig-Parrots are smaller than the nominate species. The male has a black forehead. There is black below the eyes. They have pale yellow upper abdomen, breast and sides of head. The lack the black on ear coverts (feathers covering the ears). The female has an orange breast and upper abdomen. Her lower cheeks are dusty black, joining with a black crown behind the eyes. Her lores (the regions between the eyes and bill on the side of a bird's head), throat and cheeks are pale yellow. Young birds look like adult females, but the breast is more green.
