Southern California Birds

Around my grandmothers house I have seen many beautiful birds.

I have seen and heard the Mourning Dove and their beautiful song, and a neighbor has a regular nesting couple, and some dud eggs along with prayer.

I have seen Anna's hummingbird, which is very similar to the Ruby-Throated hummingbird, only a little more magenta with some of the beautiful plumage on their head as well.

More recently (In November) I have seen a single Western Bluebird while walking my grandma's dog. I followed the bird around for a bit until he tired of me and flew off. I never saw a bluebird before then, and haven't heard of many around here to begin with. That sense of wonder that happens when you look up to see a beauty like that, so many miss.

What birds have you seen in California? Any good stories to tell?

Keep your eyes peeled!

I understand your enthusiasm. Hummingbirds, Bluebirds - it doesn't get much matter than that for birders ... We rarely see bluebirds in this area (Florida). I have only seen them 3 times in 3 years. We have too many trees in our backyard. They prefer more open areas. It would be great if you could get some photos of the birds that you see!

The following birds we see in our area (Central Florida):

Common:

Red Cardinals: http://beautyofbirds.com/cardinals.html

Blue Jays: http://beautyofbirds.com/bluejaysinterestingfacts.html Catbirds: http://beautyofbirds.com/greycatbirds.html

Sandhill Cranes: http://beautyofbirds.com/sandhillcrane.html - They come every day for our corn! Sometimes we have as many as 8! The photos on top have been taken in our backyard

Black-belled Whistling Ducks: http://beautyofbirds.com/blackbelliedwhistlingduck.html (they also like the corn)

Rarely:

Eastern Bluebirds: http://beautyofbirds.com/bluebirds.html

Painted Buntings: http://beautyofbirds.com/paintedbuntings.html

Ruby-throated Hummingbirds: http://beautyofbirds.com/rubythroatedhummingbirds.html

I look forward to hearing more from you - and potentially seeing some photos! Best wishes, Sibylle
