Greater Melampittas

Orthonychidae

The Greater Melampitta (Melampitta gigantea) is said to belong to the Orthonychidae family. It was formerly classified as a bird of paradise. Little is known about this species and its taxonomy is still uncertain. Some believe this species to be affiliated to the Pitohuis, as it appears to be poisonous to eat (Frith and Beehler 1998).

Distribution / Range:

The Greater Melampitta is endemic to Indonesia and Papua New Guinea, where it can be found in the subtropical or tropical moist lowland forests and moist montanes.
