Distribution: northeast Europe and northern Asia in summer; Southeast Asia, India, the Middle East, and China in winter. May occasionally be found in Alaska and western Europe.

Size: 14-15 cm in length with a 21-24 cm wingspan.

Plumage: Males have bright yellow undersides with black streaks on the flanks, brown upperparts, black face with a thin black bar over the throat, and a pink lower mandible. Females have a heavily streaked gray-brown back, and dull yellow undersides. They have a whitish face with dark crown, eye and cheek stripes. Immature birds are similar in appearance, but with a buff underside and face.
