Distribution: Canada and the northeastern United States in summer; the southern United States through the Caribbean and Central America in winter.
Size: 24-26 cm in length with a 34-40 cm wingspan, weighing 40-63 g.
Plumage: Heavily mottled overall with off-white and black; males have a red crown and throat while females have only the red crown. Both sexes are dull yellowish below. Juveniles are uniform dull brown. In all plumages, a useful distinctive mark is the conspicuous white wing stripe, visible both at rest and in flight. The legs are gray and the beak and eyes are black.
