Distribution: arctic coasts in summer; boreal forests in winter.

Willow Ptarmigan

Description:

Size: 35-44 cm in length with a 60-65 cm wingspan.

Plumage:  In winter, uniform white except for a black tail. In summer, males are rust-red with white wings and undersides; females are mottled and barred with brown except for white wings. Spring and fall molting plumages are highly variable. The legs are light gray, the beak is black with a white base, and the eyes are black with white eyerings.
