Distribution: northern Mexico south through Central America.

Size: 10-11 cm in length with a 14-16 cm wingspan.

Plumage:  Breeding males are olive-brown above and unstreaked buff below. The head is blackish with a white crescent below eye and an incomplete buff collar on the neck. The wings are dark with two white wing bars and a white patch at the base of the flight feathers. Females and juveniles are paler and buffier overall, and lack the cap and collar of the males. The legs, beak, and eyes are black.
