Distribution: northwestern North America, concentrated in the Pacific Northwest of the United States.
Size: 20-24 cm in length with a 38-39 cm wingspan.
Plumage: Males are slate gray above, with a rusty orange throat and breast interrupted by a broad slate-gray to black breast band, two orange wing bars, and an off-white underside. Females are similar, but paler, and the breast band is light gray or absent. Juveniles have an incomplete breast band, frequently having orange and dusky spots. The legs are pink and the beak and eyes are black.
