Distribution: Northern Pacific waters.
Size: 37-42 cm in length with a 37-42 cm wingspan.
Plumage: In breeding plumage, adults are black overall, with a white face, down-curved yellowish tufts hanging behind the eyes, and parrot-like enlarged, bright orange-red bill. In winter, the colored bill plates molt and the bill is smaller and duller, the face turns dusky, and the tufts disappear. Juveniles are dusky above and light gray below, with a small bill. In flight, the large, webbed red feet are conspicuous and distinctive of the species.
