Distribution: temperate mountain forests of western Mexico.


Size: 40 cm in length with a 83 cm wingspan.

Plumage:  Bright green with a large black bill and a red forecrown, shoulder and thighs. The shoulders and leading wing edges are red, followed by a blackish-green stripe, then a yellow stripe, followed by the remaining underwing showing dark green. The tail is black to blackish-green. The legs are gray, the bill is black, and the eyes are black with a thick yellow eyering.
