Distribution: the Western Pacific Ocean; usually breeds in the Northern Hemisphere and winters in the Southern Hemisphere.

Description:

Size: 46-50 cm in length with a 120-124 cm wingspan. 

Plumage: Adults have a grayish-brown back with a scaled pattern and a white breast and underside. The white head has variable light to heavy pale brown streaks, but the forehead is always white. The tops of the tail feathers can be white, forming a pale “horseshoe.” The bill is pale, the legs and feet are pink, and the eyes are black with white eyerings.
