Description:

Size: 39-42 cm in length with a 55-60 cm wingspan.

Plumage: Males are dusky gray-brown, with a red comb over eye, a black throat and upper breast, white-spotted sides, and a chestnut-tipped fan-shaped tail. Some at the western end of the range have white tips on the upper tail and lack the chestnut tail tip. Females and juveniles are browner with underparts that are barred with dark brown. The legs and beak are gray and the eyes are black with white eyerings.
