Distribution: coasts of Kamchatka in summer; southeast Asia in winter.


Size: 14-16 cm in length.

Plumage: Breeding adults have a red-brown head, neck and breast with dark brown streaks. They have blackish uppersides with buff and pale red fringes. In winter, adults lack the reddish coloration, but have pale brownish-gray uppersides with whitish fringing to the wings. The underparts are white and the legs are black. The eyes and spoon-shaped bill are both black.
