Distribution: arctic coasts in summer; throughout the Northern Hemisphere in winter.
Size: 14-16 cm in length with a 30-33 cm wingspan.
Plumage: Breeding males have a black back with white on the head, undersides, wings, and tail. Females are similar, but duller overall. In winter, both sexes have brown on the crown and uppersides and duller undersides, but still show some white in the wings. The beak is yellowish-brown and the legs and eyes are black.
