Distribution: Open waters of the Pacific Ocean, excluding waters off Central and South America.
Size: 40-45 cm in length with a 95-100 cm wingspan. May weigh up to 900 g.
Plumage: Uniform smoky gray; some may have a light gray to off-white throat. Tail feathers are shorter than on other shearwaters, giving the species its name.
