Distribution: Atlantic coasts of North America and Europe in summer; tropical coasts in winter. A nonmigratory population exists in the Caribbean.

Description:

Size: 37-43 cm in length with a 85-87 cm wingspan.

Plumage: Adults have gray uppersides, white undersides, a yellow-tipped black beak and a  black crown crest which becomes less extensive in winter with a white crown. Juveniles have gray and brown scalloped plumage on their backs and wings. The legs and eyes are black.
