Distribution: Upland tundra worldwide.

Description:

Size: 34-36 cm in length with a 54-60 cm wingspan.

Plumage: Uniform white in winter except for a black tail and a black line through the eye. In summer, males are flecked with dark gray-brown, with white wings and undersides, and a red patch over the eye. Females are paler, with gray, yellowish, and brown flecks on most feathers. The beak and eyes are black.
