Description:

Size: 36-40 cm in length with a 52-60 cm wingspan.

Plumage: Adults are dark above with a lighter gray throat and breast and white underparts. In breeding plumage, there is a short upright "horn" at the base of the bill, with white drooping "whiskers" at either side and a white plume above the eye. Immature birds are dark gray above and light below. The bill and legs are yellow to orange and the eyes are red.
