Description:

Size: 19-23 cm in length with a 33-35 cm wingspan. Adults weigh 50-75 g.

Plumage: Both sexes have plain brown backs and with dark brown spots on the white underparts. The red flanks and underwing and the creamy white stripe above the eye are diagnostic of the species. The red flanks also extend to the bottom of the wings, visible in flight. The legs are yellow to peach, the beak is yellow with a black tip, and the eyes are black.
