Distribution: throughout the United States and Mexico; up through central Canada in summer.
Size: 17-23 cm in length with a 31-40 cm wingspan.
Plumage: Males are black overall, with bright red shoulder patches that give the species its name. Females and juveniles are medium brown overall, heavily streaked with dusky brown. The legs and beak are gray to brownish-gray and the eyes are black.
