Distribution: arctic tundra and wetlands in summer; northern seas in winter.

Description:

Size: 55-67 cm in length with a 91-110 cm wingspan.

Plumage:  In breeding plumage both sexes have a gray head and neck, white underside, rust-red throat, and a black back spotted with white. In winter, generally white-spotted black above and white below, with a thinner and seemingly upturned bill. The bill is black and the eyes are red.
