Distribution: arctic coasts in summer; discontinuously in tropical shallow seas in winter.
Size: 18-19 cm in length with a 31-34 cm wingspan.
Plumage: In the breeding season, females have a dark gray back, with a bright chestnut neck and breast, black face and white throat. Males are similar-looking to females but have more muted colors. They have gray to black legs with flattened toes to assist with their swimming. Juveniles are gray to brown on the back, with off-white undersides and a black spot over the eye. In winter, they are mostly gray above and white below with the black eyespot.
