Size: 33-36 cm in length with a 58-61 cm wingspan, weighing 230-425 g.

Plumage: Mainly reddish-gray to mahogany brown, becoming browner on the back, and with a gray tail, underside, and flight feathers. The bill is white with a red base, and the legs and eyes are red. Juvenile birds are duller than adults and the plumage is browner.
