Distribution: discontinuously throughout freshwater areas of the northern United States in summer; discontinuously around the Gulf of Mexico in winter.

Description:

Size: 17-18 cm in length with a 45-48 cm wingspan.

Plumage: Pale overall with sandy uppersides, a narrow incomplete black breast band, a stubby beak with an orange base, and yellowish legs. Juveniles are similar, but have a black beak and broken gray breast band.
