Distribution: Pacific coasts and shallow seas of North and South America.
Size: 47-49 cm in length with a 108-110 cm wingspan.
Plumage: Both sexes have a brown head, back, and upper wings, with a patch of white at the base of each wing. The underside is whiter, with the underwing appearing white with a brown border. The breast is also white, with the upper brown coloration fading into white on the throat. The beak is pale to pink at the base and black at the tip, and the eyes are black with a thin white line under each. The legs are pale to pink.
