Other Names: Scaly-breasted Munia, Spotted Munia, Spice Finch.
Distribution: tropical Southeast Asia; can be found in eastern Australia.
Size: 11-12 cm in length, weighing 12-16 g.
Plumage: The adult has a stubby dark bill typical of grain eating birds, brown back and wings and a dark brown head. The undersides are white with dark brown scale markings. The sexes are similar, although males are slightly darker than the females on the underside and throat. Coloration may vary slightly among the 11 subspecies. Juveniles have pale brown uppersides, uniform buff undersides, and lack the dark head coloration of the adults.
