Northern Lapwing

Other Names: Peewit, Green Plover

Distribution: temperate Eurasia in summer; discontinuously throughout western Europe, north Africa, the Middle East, and east Asia in winter. A nonmigratory population exists in western Europe.

Description:

Size: 28-31 cm in length with a 67-72 cm wingspan.

Plumage:  Mainly black and white, with a green-tinted back. Males have a long crest and a black crown, throat and breast contrasting with a white face. Females and juveniles have shorter crests, and have less strongly marked heads, but are otherwise similar. The legs are pink and the eyes and beak are black.
