Distribution: Poorly understood. Believed to be resident year-round in the South Pacific, possibly north to Hawaii.

Description:

Size: 38-41 cm in length with a 95-99 cm wingspan.

Plumage: Mostly dark gray to grayish-brown with a pale throat. Pale bars on teh underside of the wing can be seen during flight. Legs and feet are pale, with black distal webbing on the toes. The eyes are black with no visible eyering, and the bill is black, sometimes with a patch of white at the base.
