Distribution: western North America, north to Alaska in summer and south to Mexico in winter. A nonmigratory population exists in the southwestern United States.

Description:

Size: 18-19 cm in length with a 34-37 cm wingspan.

Plumage: Males are generally sky blue above, with paler blue coloration below and a white abdomen.  females are generally dull gray, with greenish-blue on the flight feathers. The eyes, beak, and legs are black.
