Distribution: boreal forests worldwide in summer; temperate and tropical regions of the Northern Hemisphere in winter. A nonmigratory population exists in the northwestern United States.
Size: 26-33 cm in length with a 55-69 cm wingspan.
Plumage: The uppersides are slate gray in males and brown in females; the undersides of both are light and streaked. The long tail is boldly banded. The legs are yellow, the beak is black with a yellow base, and the eyes are black with yellow eyerings.
