Distribution: Europe, the Middle East, and central and east Asia in summer; discontinuously throughout central Africa and southeast Asia in winter. A nonmigratory population exists in southern Asia.
Size: 15-18 cm in length with a 32-35 cm wingspan.
Plumage: Adults have a gray-brown back and wings, a white belly, and a white underside with one black neckband. They have a brown cap, a white forehead, and a black mask around the eyes with white above. The legs are orange to peach and the toes are webbed. The beak is dark and the eyes are black with yellow eyerings.
