Distribution: western Texas, Oklahoma, and Kansas.
Size: 38-41 cm in length with a 63-70 cm wingspan.
Plumage: Chicken-like in profile, with grayish-brown barring above and below and a short black tail. Breeding males have long black feathers on the sides of the neck that form erect "horns" and reddish-purple air sacs inflated during courtship displays. Females have shorter horns and no air sacs.
