Lesser Goldfinch

Range:

This species can be found in the far western U.S. and northwestern Mexico.

 

 

Description:

Height is 9 to 12 cm. Males have bright yellow underparts and big white patches in the tail, and on the wings.   They have solid black from the back to the upper head including the ear-covertsor they can be green in coloration.  Their forehead is black.  The amount of black or green on the male can differ according to area of the country. Size differences can be noted according to location also. Females'  have upperparts that are greyish olive-green, underparts are yellow in coloration. They have a narrow strip of white on the wings, and a little or no white on the tail. Females have  dark grey bills.
