Distribution: Northwestern Hawaii.
Size: 35-40 cm in length.
Plumage: Generally dark brown. The bill is short and flat; dark green with variable black blotching in males, and dull orange with variable black blotching in females. Adults usually have a ring of fat around the neck. Males can be distinguished by faint iridescence on the head or neck and have slightly upturned central tail feathers. The wings have an iridescent purplish-green patch in both sexes. Extensive white feathering is common on the head and neck of older birds. The legs and feet are orange, usually brighter in the male. The eyes are black with a conspicuous white eyering.
