Range:

Species is found in California and Baja California and winters in the southwestern United States and northern Mexico.

Description:

Height is 12 cm.  Both genders are grey with pink to greyish flesh-color bills, which are stubby in appearance. They have yellow on their rear area, chest area, paired bars on the wings, plus yellow tips on the wing tips.  The tail is black with white band markings.  Their plummage dulls in the winter. Males have black caps and faces and larger areas of brighter yellow, paler body color.  Females have a more brown coloration, lack the black, smaller yellow areas.
