Distribution: salt marshes and lagoons of coastal North America.

Description:

Size: 38-43 cm in length with a 102-107 cm wingspan.

Plumage:  In summer, adults' back and wings are dark gray, the trailing edge of the wing is white, and the wing tip and cap are black, without white spots. In winter, the cap is white to light gray. Juveniles are generally dark brown with a contrasting white rump and a broad black tail band. The legs and beak are reddish-black and the eyes are black with white eyerings.
