Species can be found in southern Canada, much of the United States, and northern Mexico. They are not as common in the east. The populations in Mexico and adjacent states of the United States full time residents. Other birds can be migratory, wintering in the southern United States, Mexico and south to Guatemala. Vagrants have been reported in western Europe.
The back is dark-streaked brown. The underparts are white with a dark central spot. Their cheeks and the crown sides are chestnut. They have white eyebrow and crown stripes.The corner of the tail is also white.
