Distribution: plains of the northern Midwest in summer; south Texas through Mexico in winter.
Size: 14-18 cm in length with a 27-30 cm wingspan.
Plumage: Breeding males are black, with a large white wing patch. Females, juveniles, and non-breeding males are a streaked sandy color above, white below, with a white eye line, faint "mustache" stripe, white wing patch, and rounded, white-tipped tail feathers. The beak is brown and the eyes are black.
