Distribution: arctic waters of the north Atlantic.
Size: 55-63 cm in length with a 87-100 cm wigspan.
Plumage: Males have a black back with two white spots at the top of the tail, a white underside and neck, a conspicuous orange-yellow bill, a light gray crown, and an orange "shield" on the forehead. The wings are black with a white flash across the wing mantles. Females are generally brown with flanks marked with black crescents and a black scale pattern on the wing mantle. The eyes are gray in males and black in females.
