Distribution: Russia, Scandinavia, and the Baltic states in summer; discontinuously in western Europe, north-central Africa, the Middle East, and south Asia in winter.

Description:

Size: 18-20 cm in length with a 33-36 cm wingspan. Both sexes are approximately 33–73 g in weight.

Plumage: The short stocky body is mottled brown on top and pale underneath. The pointed wings are medium brown fading into dark brown at the tip, and have yellow stripes visible while the bird is in flight. The tail feathers resemble the flight feathers. The legs are short and white, and the eyes are black with a white eyering and dark brown eyestripe reaching to thebase of the beak, which is white at the base and black at the tip.
