Distribution: discontinuously throughout the United States and southern Canada.
Size: 40-49 cm in length.
Plumage: Males have a white, fan-shaped, black-bordered white crest, blackish body with dull rusty to chestnut flanks, and white breast with two black stripes down the side. Females are generally dull gray-brown, with a warmer brown head and crest. Both sexes show a white wing patch in flight. The bill is black in males and brown in females, and the eyes are yellow.
