Distribution: northern coasts of Asia, ranging south to Europe outside the breeding season.

Description:

Size: 64-78 cm in length with a 130-160 cm wingspan, weighing 2-3.3 kg.

Plumage: Dusky brown with a conspicuous white belly and undertail, a white patch on the front of the face, and undersides that are barred and flecked with black. Juveniles lack the white face and black bars on the undersides. The legs and bill are orange and the eyes are black.
