Description:

Size: 26-28 cm in length with a 57-59 cm wingspan.

Plumage: Breeding adults have mottled light gray upperparts with chestnut streaks. The face, throat and breast are heavily spotted with black, with some black streaking on the undersides. In winter the plumage becomes uniform pale gray on the uppersides. The legs are dark  gray and the beak and eyes are black.
