Distribution: discontinuously throughout northern and western North America in summer; southeastern United States in winter.
Size: 17-19 cm in length with a 26-28 cm wingspan.
Plumage: Variable. Generally dark and unstreaked rufous to brown on the back. The tail is typically redder than the back. The breast is white and heavily spotted with brown triangular spots. The head and face are drab. The legs are pink, the beak is yellow with a brown tip, and the eyes are black with white eyerings.
