Distribution: forested areas of northern Eurasia in summer; coasts of Europe, Asia, and north Africa in winter.

Description:

Size: 42-50 cm in length with a 71-85 cm wingspan.

Plumage: Males have a rusty head, buff crown, pinkish-buff breast, and gray body. Females are dull brownish streaked with gray-brown or rust-brown. Both sexes have large white shoulder patches. The bill is bluish-gray and the eyes are black.
