Distribution: Throughout Europe, the Middle East and lowland regions of East and Central Asia in summer; discontinuously in South Asia and sub-Saharan Africa in winter. A nonmigratory population exists in southeastern China.

Description:

Size: 29-35 cm in length with a 70-84 cm wingspan.

Plumage: Adults have a gray back with a black crown and 2 thick black vertical eye stripes stripes. The throat is white, thighs and underside are brick red and the breast is white with black streaks. Juveniles are tawny colored where adults are white. Both have yellow legs, black eyes with yellow eye rings and a hooked beak that is off-white at the base with a black tip.
