Distribution: Brushlands of northeastern Mexico; occasionally found in south Texas.

Description:

Size: 22 cm in length with a 33 cm wingspan. 

Plumage: Mature males have black plumage with a dull red or pinkish red collar on the nape, shoulders, and belly, and the belly is mottled with black. Mature females have a black head and breast like males but with a greenish back and a yellow underside. Young birds are similar to females but have less black. The beak is black, big and stubby, and the legs and eyes are also black.
