Common Rosefinch

Other Names: Scarlet Rosefinch

Distribution: eastern and northern Europe, Asia excluding desert regions. Found in summer in thickets, woodland and forest edges near rivers and in winter in gardens and orchards, wetlands and locally in dry oak woods.

Description:

Size: Adults weigh an average of 23 g.

Plumage: Adult males have brilliant rosy to bright red head, breast and rump; dark brown to black wings with two indistinct red bars, and a white belly. Females and young males are dull gray with some specimens having a yellowish-gray back and rump. The beak is yellow in males and gray in females, and the eyes are black.
